Centre d’Etudes des Tunnels (CETU) is a specialised body of the French administration devoted to all technical aspects of tunnels (mainly road tunnels). Its activities cover engineering and expertise on the one hand, research and technical policy on the other hand (it prepares the technical and safety guidelines for the French road tunnels). The technical fields include civil structures (geotechnics, excavation, lining, waterproofing, drainage, etc.), equipment (ventilation, lighting, communications, monitoring, etc.), safety, environment, operation. CETU was involved in the technical investigation into the catastrophic fire in the Mont Blanc tunnel on 24-26 March 1999.
