The Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) is a consultancy that applies economic and statistical tools to business and policy evaluation problems.

The company was founded in 1993 by Douglas McWilliams. Since then, it has undertaken projects for corporate, public and international clients. These have ranged from estimating the effects of transport developments on local economies, through forecasting demand for mobile telephones, to assessing the impact of the introduction of the Euro on the City of London.

He is one of Europe's top economics consultants. He is a well known public speaker and his face and voice are familiar in the news media. Before founding CEBR, he was Chief Economic Adviser to the CBI, receiving the Golden Guru award for Best UK economic forecaster in 1992. Prior to this, he was Chief Economist at IBM UK and Chairman of the economics forecasting group of UNICE, the European federation of employers' organisations. As well as being a member of the Council of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, he is also Economic Adviser to The Chartered Institute of Marketing and NCL Investments Ltd. He has been involved in over 300 consulting studies of various kinds. He holds a BA in PPE and an MPhil in Economics from Lincoln College, Oxford.

Mark Pragnell

 

Consultant

 

He (re)joined the team in August 2000 as a Director and is responsible for developing CEBR's business advisory portfolio. Mark has a background in consumer research and strategic planning. He was previously head of the Consumer Intelligence Unit at Consumers' Association, where he led research into consumer behaviour. He has been business planning manager in Railtrack's London Development team. But he started his career as an economist at CEBR. Mark lectures philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford University.
