INERIS

INERIS (France) has a mission of assessing and preventing both chronic and accidental risks to people and environment due to industrial plants, chemical substances and underground operations. INERIS is a kind of Public Institution with industrial and commercial dimensions, working under the general supervision for the French Ministry for the Environment and Land Use Planning. The Institute was founded in 1990 as a result of a merge between two previously well known technical centres named CERCHAR (National Research Centre for Coal Mines) and IRCHA (Applied chemical research Institute). INERIS conducts research and expertise activities requested by the public authorities and industrial operators. It comprises teams of chemists, physicists, physicians, ecotoxicologists, veterinary surgeons, economists, statisticians and specialists in risk assessment, (about 450 persons including 250 scientists and staff members).

Dr Emmanuel Ruffin

 

Research Project Leader

 

Studied aeronautics and fluid mechanics at the University of Aix-Marseille. His PhD thesis (1994) concerned with the numerical turbulence modelling of highly variable density flows. At INERIS, he has been involved in many European research projects on explosion and dispersion. Recently he has studied safety issues of some major tunnel projects. He also has participated to the preliminary technical analysis of the MONT BLANC disaster and a has realised a significant part of the fire and ventilation tests during the legal enquiry. His current position at INERIS is research project leader for safety in tunnels and related problems with the road and rail transportation of dangerous goods.

Guy Marlair

 

Engineer from the Ecole des Mines de Douai (Thermal and air conditioning Engineering) joined INERIS (1989) to carry out fire research and related consultancy and training at the Fire Department, now merged into the Accidental Risk Division of INERIS.
